It refers to a child’s insistence on not speaking in one or more specific social situations, such as at school or at a particular social gathering. A child with selective mutism may remain completely or almost completely silent, or in some cases may only whisper in a specific situation. Although selective mutism usually begins to appear before the age of five, it may not become apparent until the child is placed in a situation where they are expected to speak aloud, such as starting school.
