Postnatal depression:
If the symptoms of a transient postnatal psychological disorder persist for more than two weeks, the condition is diagnosed as postnatal depression, which is a more severe form of mild mood disorder. Psychological stress caused by a lack of support from a partner and family contributes to the development of thedisorder.
Psychopharmacological treatment is avoided for postnatal depression due to the risk that psychiatric medication poses to the baby if the mother is breastfeeding.
Postpartum psychosis:
A psychotic disorder affecting the mother after childbirth, although rare; it is characterised by acute symptoms including delusions (doubts, incoherence, irrational thoughts, and obsessive fears regarding the baby and its health), as well as auditory hallucinations instructing her to harm herself or her baby.
Postpartum psychosis is considered a psychiatric emergency requiring urgent medical care.
