It is an excessive preoccupation on the part of an elderly person with the fear of having a serious illness, or the belief that they actually have one, based on their interpretation of physical symptoms and signs which they take as evidence of the presence of such an organic disease; and a thorough medical examination does not support the idea that the illness the patient believes they have is present, although the elderly patient may be convinced for a time that they are overreacting to their fears.
