Have you ever sworn that something happened, whilst everyone else insists the opposite is true? Have you ever recalled a memory as if you’d actually experienced it, only to discover later that it wasn’t real? This is known as ‘false memories’, a psychological and neurological phenomenon in which the mind creates memories of events that did not actually happen.
False memories are mental experiences in which a mental image of an unreal event is formed, yet it feels as though it were real. These memories can result from misunderstandings, external suggestions, or even the conflation of similar events that took place at different times.
In some cases, false memories may be a source of anxiety, lead to relationship conflicts, or even result in legal problems if relied upon as evidence. They may also cause identity confusion and affect how we view ourselves and our past experiences.
It is important to realise that memory is not a precise video recording, but rather a mental process influenced by emotions, context and subsequent experiences. Therefore, reviewing events with a mental health professional can be very helpful in gaining a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s actual experiences.
