Do we really need psychiatry?

In our Arab society, psychiatry is still surrounded by a great deal of stigma and superstition. But with the increasing pressures of modern life, an important question arises: do we really need psychiatry, or can we rely on ourselves to cope with psychological challenges?

What is psychiatry really?

Psychiatry is not merely ‘sedative pills’ or ‘a chat with a doctor’, as some people believe. It is a comprehensive medical discipline that treats brain chemistry disorders, behavioural disorders and mental illnesses that have a real impact on quality of life. It is a combination of pharmacological, behavioural and cognitive therapies.

Signs that you may need to see a psychiatrist

  • Persistent physical symptoms with no obvious medical cause (pain, fatigue, sleep problems)
  • Severe mood swings affecting your work and relationships
  • Escaping reality through isolation or addiction
  • Recurring negative thoughts or suicidal tendencies
  • Loss of enjoyment in everything you used to love

Common myths about psychiatry

“Psychiatry is only for serious illnesses”, “psychiatric medication is addictive”, “mental health problems are a sign of personal weakness” – these are all misconceptions. Psychiatry, like any other medical specialism, helps with problems ranging from the simple (such as stress) to the complex (such as schizophrenia).

Mental health is not a luxury, but the foundation of your physical health and quality of life. Seeing a psychiatrist does not mean you are ‘mad’; it means you are brave enough to ask for help when you need it.

Alternatives to traditional psychiatry

If you’re not ready to see a psychiatrist, you can start with online psychotherapy, support groups or self-help books. However, in moderate to severe cases, a specialist remains the safest and most effective option.
