We all feel sad from time to time; it is a natural part of the human experience. But how do we know whether this sadness is temporary and fleeting, or whether it has developed into clinical depression requiring specialist intervention? Understanding the difference between the two can help you or your loved ones seek the right support at the right time.
Normal grief is a temporary emotional response to painful events or life stresses such as the loss of a loved one, the failure of a project, or feelings of loneliness. Grief is usually linked to a clear cause and gradually begins to subside over time, particularly when supported by friends and family.
Clinical depression (or major depressive disorder) is a chronic mental health condition that affects the way a person thinks, feels and behaves. It is not always linked to a specific cause and may appear suddenly or develop gradually. Its symptoms include:
The key factors are duration, severity and the impact on daily life. If symptoms persist for more than two weeks and are interfering with daily functioning at work or in social relationships, this may be a sign of clinical depression.
Don’t wait until your symptoms get worse. If you feel that your sadness is lingering, that you’re unable to cope, or that you’re having recurring negative thoughts, see a psychologist or psychiatrist for a thorough assessment and a suitable treatment plan.
At our centre, we offer specialist psychological support to help you work through your feelings and understand yourself better. Your mental health is a priority – please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
